Gulf Coast Enzianer Celebrate 75 Years with German-American Society— and Bring Cousins Along for the Party
Saturday, August 15, 2026, was a night for family — the kind you're born into and the kind you dance with. As the German-American Society Friendship (GASF) of Pinellas County marked its 75th anniversary, the Gulf Coast Enzianer Schuhplattler Verein took the floor to celebrate a milestone decades in the making, surrounded by both local members and visiting family from two sister clubs.
The Day Begins
Before the anniversary festivities got underway, the day started with formal pictures for the Gulf Coast Enzianer Schuhplattler Verein, taken in preparation for the club's upcoming Fahnenweihe in February — the first of many steps toward that milestone weekend.
On the Floor
The Enzianer performed two dances for the anniversary crowd, adding their own chapter to an evening already rich with history — a decade-by-decade retrospective, a moment of silence honoring longtime cook Steve Gielazyn, and a city proclamation recognizing 75 years of GASF's presence in Pinellas County. Dinner was delicious, and the dance floor stayed full long after the formal program wrapped.
A Gift Toward the Future
In keeping with the spirit of the evening, the Enzianer presented GASF with a $1,000 gift toward a new stove for the clubhouse kitchen — a practical, generous nod to the meals and gatherings still to come over the next 75 years.
Family from Down the Road and Down the Coast
No anniversary is complete without family, and GASF welcomed two sister clubs as honored guests: STV Maiglöckchen of Daytona Beach and The Original Auerhahn Schuhplattlers of Miami. Both groups danced alongside the Enzianer throughout the evening, turning the celebration into a true reunion of Schuhplattler clubs from across Florida.
The visiting clubs came bearing gifts of their own. Auerhahn brought delicious treats that were shared among everyone once the formal festivities closed for the night. Maiglöckchen went a step further, presenting GASF with a full-sized decorated beer barrel and a Münchner Kindl costume — both destined for parade duty at future Oktoberfest celebrations.
Looking Ahead: 50 Years and a Fahnenweihe
Amid the celebration of GASF's 75th, the Enzianer also announced their own milestone to the GASF membership: their 50th anniversary and Fahnenweihe weekend, set for February 12–14, 2027. It may feel distant — tucked on the far side of Oktoberfest on the calendar — but there's a considerable amount of planning between now and then to bring the weekend to life.
Fahnenweihe means "flag blessing," a treasured tradition marking a club's milestone anniversary. There are three ways for the community to support this endeavor:
– *Buy tickets* to attend the celebration
– *Buy an ad* in the Festbuch (program)
– *Make a tax-deductible donation*
The Not-Jürgen Peace Conference
No family gathering is complete without a little mischief. Late in the evening, one half of the club's twin mascot flamingo duo, Jürgen and Not-Jürgen, went missing — spirited away by the visiting Miami cousins from Auerhahn. True to the spirit of the night, diplomacy prevailed: Not-Jürgen was safely returned the following morning at breakfast, an event now affectionately known among the clubs as "The Not-Jürgen Peace Conference."
It was, in every sense, a night that captured what these clubs are really about — generosity, tradition, dance, and just enough good-natured trouble to make it memorable.
