Great news — our sign nightmare is officially over!
For the past six months, our electronic sign out front has been… well… moody. Sometimes stuck on one slide, sometimes totally black. Reboots helped when they felt like it.
A replacement computer was going to cost around $2,000, and it wouldn’t even give us modern features. So our tech team rolled up their sleeves and decided to build a custom solution instead.
They reverse‑engineered how the sign works, figured out how to send new slides without the vendor’s software, and tested a Raspberry Pi 4 as a proof‑of‑concept. It worked perfectly.
This weekend, they installed an industrial Raspberry Pi 5 — built to survive Florida heat — for only a few hundred dollars. And the sign is finally running smoothly again.
Bonus: we can now display things like live Bayern Munich scores!
Huge shoutout to Brandon and Michael for sticking with this project and making it happen.
